Quick answer
Does my business need a Digital Product Passport?
Short answer: if you place a product in a regulated group on the EU market — as a manufacturer, importer or brand — you will need a Digital Product Passport for it, on that group's timeline. Here is how to tell quickly.
Two-minute check: the
free readiness check maps your products to the exact regulations, deadlines and obligations that apply to you, and hands you a personalised report.
You almost certainly need one if…
- you make or import batteries (EV, e-bike / LMT, or industrial > 2 kWh) — mandatory 18 February 2027;
- you place textiles, electronics, furniture, tyres, iron & steel or aluminium on the EU market — phasing in 2027–2028 under ESPR;
- you are an EU importer of any of the above made outside the EU — the obligation lands on you;
- you sell under your own brand or private label — the name on the product carries the duty.
You may have time if…
Your products are entirely outside the current and first-wave ESPR groups, or you only distribute within the EU (in which case your duty is to verify a passport exists, not to create it). Even then, the direction is one-way: more groups are added each working plan.
What to do next
Map your obligated products and their dates, confirm who carries the obligation for each line, and inventory which data you hold versus what sits with suppliers. The readiness check does the first pass automatically; the compliance guide is the deeper playbook.
Frequently asked questions
Do small businesses need a Digital Product Passport?
Yes — the obligation is by product and market access, not company size. A ten-person importer of e-bikes carries the same passport duty as a large manufacturer, on the same date.
Do I need a DPP if I only sell within the EU?
If you manufacture or import, yes. If you only distribute products others placed on the market, your duty is to verify a compliant passport exists before making the product available.
